This evening in Kreuzberg (one of the cooler, younger Berlin neighborhoods), hundreds of punks, communists, anti-faschists and anarchists will dress in black, don balaclavas and cheap Chinese-produced keffiyehs, fill their bags with cobblestones and take to the streets to fight with the cops and torch cars.
Entire streets will be lit up by flames, and the skirmishes with cops in riot gear will last deep into the night.
It happens every year like clockwork. The day begins with orderly, peaceful demonstrations protesting capitalism or war and, this year certainly, Israel. Then comes the night, and the rocks come out.
